Next week I'll partecipate to the LRR10 Conference (Logic, Reasoning and Rationality Conference) at the University of Ghent (Belgium). I'll have a talk about concept representation in formal ontologies (the full program is available here).

Can a machine think? It was the 1950 when Alan Turing, in the famous article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence", asked himself (and to the entire world) this burning question. The english mathematician was convinced that it was possible to answer affermatively to the question in the case in which a "machine" (e.g. a computer or a soft-bot) was able to overcome an "imitation game" called Turing test.

Since the 1990 it was created a prize to implement the Turing test in an international competition contest: the Loebner Prize.

At this contest partecipate a set of selectioned "agents" from around the world. This year the competition will be held at the Reading University and there are six finalist systems (Alice, Ultra Hal, Brother Jerome, Elbot, Eugene Goostam and Jabberwacky).

This is the fact. But the critical question is: if a "machine" will be able to fully overcome the Turing test can it be really considered as "intelligent" or, better, as "thinking"? In other words: is it the overcoming of the "imitation game" test a necessary and sufficient condition to state that a machine is able to think?

In don't think so. It's is well known, in fact, (as even pointed out by Marco Varone) that there are a set of "tricks", based on the principle of "dialogue predictability" throught the extraction of keywords from text, that are easily implementable within a computer software but that do not represent a real form of machine textual comprehension.

Avete mai sentito parlare di Ontolomie? Su Nòva Lab Il Sole 24 Ore una mia riflessione su questa nuova forma possibile di ibridazione tra la prospettiva ontologica e quella banalmente "folksonomica". L'idea è che tra ontologia e folksonomia possa esserci un modo più proficuo attraverso il quale riuscire a realizzare il sogno di un web più "intelligente" ed in cui gli agenti informatici siano dotati di maggiore capacità semantica.

Esattamente un mese fa mi stavo occupando, per un articolo che sarebbe stato poi pubblicato sull'ultimo numero del 2007 dell'inserto culturale "Il Mese" di Rassegna Sindacale (interamente dedicato al tema dell'Intelligenza Artificiale), di avatar, Human Digital Assistant e realtà virtuale.
E fu così che mi capitò di "imbattermi" nell'avanzatissima realtà hi-tech (tutta italiana) della "fattoria degli avatar" di H-Farm: un vero e proprio polo ad alta innovazione tecnologica in grado di fungere da "incubatore" per lo sviluppo di start-up legate al settore dell'hight-tech.

Tra le imprese nate sotto l'ombello di H-Farm una mi colpì subito. Si chiama H-Care. E produce avatar. O meglio Assistenti Digitali (doppi virtuali con cui poter interagire e ai quali poter chiedere informazioni per svolgere alcuni tipi di operazioni. Ad es. fiscali).

Ora: uno dei principali problemi con cui hanno a che fare i "costruttori di avatar" (tra cui quelli di H-Care) riguarda il far percepire tali artefatti come delle entità intelligenti e realmente in grado di svolgere i compiti loro assegnati. Tali assistenti virtuali, dunque, per poter essere utilizzati in situazioni concrete (ad es. per richieste di aiuto nei siti di e-commerce o per fornire informazioni sul come svolgere alcune operazioni fiscali on-line) hanno la necessità di dover sembrare, agli occhi dell'operatore umano con cui hanno a che fare, reali. O meglio: realmente "intelligenti".

A quanto pare, nonostante la strada da percorrere in questo senso sia ancora notevole, il sempre maggiore utilizzo che si sta facendo di tali "doppi virtuali" (pensiamo a Second Life), e le sempre maggiori possibilità offerte, nel settore della computer science, dalla ricerca scientifica, stanno producendo notevoli risultati per il raggiungimento di tale obiettivo (il video che vedete qui sotto ne dà una conferma).

Ci sono, dunque, (in questo come in altri settori dell'IA) dei segnali incoraggianti per la ricerca. Ad ogni modo, però, la strada che porta alla dotazione degli agenti artificiali dei famosi "qualia" di cui parlano i filosofi (ammesso che sia percorribile) appare ancora lunga. Ed estremamente tortuosa.

Citeseer: a search engine for scientific publications

It's name is Citeseer. It's an efficient dedicated search engine for the retrieval of scientific publications mainly focused on the topics of computer and information science. It's an efficient document retrieval system which allows to do queries in different ways (e.g. starting by the title of the paper, or by authors, citations etc). Very useful. Citeseer's main sponsor are the National Scientific Foundation, the Microsoft Reasearch Group and the NASA.

The realization of specific dedicated search engines for different domains could improve the capability of retrieving the relevant informations. Why? Simply because, in comparison with a "generic" search engine, this engines have less document to manage. And so the informational complexity is lower. More informations about Citeseer here.

Luca Chittaro è docente ordinario di Interazione Uomo-Macchina all'Università di Udine. Nel 1998 ha fondato il laboratorio di ricerca HCI Lab di cui è direttore. E' presidente di Sigchi ITALY, l'associazione italiana sull'Interazione Utente-Calcolatore, ed è autore della rubrica "Interattivo" su Il Sole 24 Ore.
